Typhoid Fever

Typhoid fever is common in countries where drinking water and food cleanliness are poor. The vaccine gives you partial protection from infection. It does not give you 100% protection. Visit our travel clinic before your trip to talk to a pharmacist.

  • The bacteria spreads from the feces or urine of an infected person.
  • The bacteria spreads to you through food and water contaminated with the bacteria.

Tips to decrease your risk of typhoid fever include:

  • Protect yourself with the vaccine before you travel.
  • Follow the steps for proper hand washing with soap and water.
  • Be cautious with:
    • Public water that may contain raw sewage.
    • Food and water from any area that does not look clean.
  • Take the recommended steps to eat and drink safely while you are away.
